Annual Water Main & Hydrant Flushing Program – June to August 2017

Starting in Mid-June, Sun Peaks Utilities will proceed with flushing of all town water lines between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm as time allows. This flushing program will continue for 6 to 8 weeks.

Why is flushing important?

Flushing is a method of cleaning the water main pipes by forcing water through them at high speed and discharging it through hydrants, which are left open until the water runs clear.  This fast-moving water flow scours and cleans out mineral deposits and sediment that have built up over time and settled at the bottom of the pipes.

During water main flushing…Residents may experience a temporary discolouration of water while the water main is being flushed.   Any disruption should be short-lived.  To reduce sediment entering your home, follow these steps;

  • Avoid turning on your taps or flushing your toilet during the hours of flushing. This could draw sediment into the water pipes on your property, water meter, hot water tank and into water filters (if you have them).
  • Turn off all time-delayed water line appliances
  • Store a sufficient reserve of drinkable water for use during the above hours. Your water will still be safe for consumption, however, may have an unpleasant taste and/or odour.

When water main flushing is completed…

  • Remove aerators (sink/tap screens) from taps and rinse them out. If the aerator is covered in white minerals (calcium carbonate), soak the screen in pickling vinegar for 10 to 20 minutes and rinse before reinstalling the screens. You can also use white vinegar or products like CLR to clean the screen,
  • Turn on your cold water at the tap located nearest your property’s water meter/shut-off and let it run for a minimum of 10 minutes or until it runs clear,
  • Place the aerators back on all taps, and
  • If you ran water during the flushing process you may have to repeat the above steps for all taps, toilets and hot water tanks in your home until the sediments clears up and the water runs clear.   Remember, your water will still be safe for consumption.
